This is of course not simply Frege’s definition of the continuity of a function, but his concept-script rendering of Weierstrass’s important 1859 definition.52 Frege’s comment concerning this definition is instructive: ‘If in this case the formula seems longwinded by comparison with the verbal expression, you must always bear in mind that the former gives the definition of a concept which the latter only names’ (PW:24). Frege thinks that only the formula is defining the concept, and he almost underplays the significance of the informal phrase. Surely this phrase does not merely ‘name’ the concept, for it is in itself structured and displays some aspects of the structure of the concept, although not as many as the formula does. We see, in any case, that Frege defines concepts by means of concept-script as well, although such definitions of concepts are not themselves expressed or expressible in concept-script, that is, with the help of the and the identity sign, because mere concept-expressions do not name judgeable-contents. It seems, however, that such definitions, obtained in the transition from informal characterizations to formal expressions in concept-script, belong to the very core of Frege’s logical analysis of arithmetic. It is therefore necessary to look at this in more detail, and for this it is necessary to touch upon some issues treated in Grundgesetze.
